Exchange transfusion is the treatment of choice in hemolytic disease of the newborn infant caused by blood group incompatibility, and may also be indicated in neonates with hyperbilirubinemia, disseminated intravascular coagulation, sepsis, and respiratory distress syndrome. Methods and possible complications of exchange transfusion are outlined.
