The production of alloantibodies or autoantibodies by the mother, against antigens on fetal tissues, exposes the fetus to the risk of antibody-mediated perinatal disease. The biologic properties of immunoglobulins and the diseases that they produce are discussed. The use of laboratory tests to diagnose these diseases in high-risk women can minimize morbidity and mortality.
