The alpha-fetoprotein screening test for neural tube defects can provide specific information on the condition of an unborn fetus and can offer reassurance to families at increased risk for these defects. However, additional studies to document safety and effectiveness of this procedure in various settings are needed. Proper implementation of an AFP testing program in the United States has the potential to enhance maternal-fetal well-being.
