Theophylline and salicylates, drugs that are frequently prescribed for pediatric patients,
have a well-defined range of optimal therapeutic concentration; therapeutic monitoring
of these agents is accurate and specific. In contrast, despite the widespread use
of acetaminophen, its therapeutic range is not well established; however, serious
toxicity from overdose is predictable from the serum concentration.
