      Guidelines for preoperative crossmatch schedules based on patterns of blood usage in an individual institution and the benefits of the type and screen are explored. The safety of the type and screen as a pretransfusion evaluation is critiqued in light of the increasing frequency of providing uncrossmatched or partially crossmatched blood.
