HLA typing has proved to be a valuable and versatile clinical tool, permitting more successful renal transplantation, platelet transfusion, and paternity testing, and even serving as a diagnostic test for ankylosing spondylitis. HLA typing of a family can indicate which relatives are at highest risk for diseases such as hemochromatosis and juvenile-onset diabetes mellitus.
