Therapeutic hemapheresis rarely is directed at the underlying abnormality of the blood or plasma constituent, but rather at secondary manifestations. It is most appropriate when an acute effect is desired, as a substitute when conventional therapy fails or is contraindicated, or as an adjunctive measure to other treatment when it is desirable to accelerate recovery. Conditions that may benefit from plasma exchange, leukapheresis, plateletpheresis, and stem cell collection are discussed.
