The past decade has seen the development of methods for rapid detection of viral antigens directly in clinical specimens, for more rapid and specific identification of viral isolates, and for more rapid and efficient demonstration of viral antibodies. This progress in rapid diagnosis of viral infections aids in successful therapeutic intervention of patients or their contacts and in the control of viral diseases in the community.
