Genital herpes infections, among the most prevalent and rapidly spreading of the genital
infections, are highlighted in this discussion. Chlamydial infections are also covered
since these parasites were, until recently, considered to be viruses. The clinical
presentation of a chlamydial infection may mimic the presentation of a viral infection,
and diagnosis requires specimen collection and processing procedures that are similar
to those required for a virus.
