Plasmids are a diverse set of genetic elements that can be used as a means of identifying bacterial isolates of the same strain. The technique of analyzing plasmids, plasmid fingerprinting, has been utilized for epidemiologic studies of both nosocomial and community-acquired infections. The technique is rapid and relatively simple and can be performed by most clinical microbiology laboratories.
