The last decade of literature pertaining to the immunohistochemical profiles of peripheral
and central nervous system neoplasms is discussed. The survey includes a critical
analysis of studies concerning peripheral nerve sheath tumors, granular cell tumors,
meningiomas, hemangioblastomas, choroid plexus neoplasms, primary malignant lymphomas
and their distinction from mononuclear inflammatory cell lesions, angioendotheliosis,
astrocytomas, oligodendrogliomas, ependymomas, neuroblastomas, retinoblastomas, medulloblastomas,
pineal cell tumors, neuroendocrine cell neoplasms, germ cell tumors, chordomas, and
metastatic carcinomas. The panel of antibodies that should be used to draw diagnostic
distinctions among similar-appearing or related tumors, and the expected results of
immunohistochemical staining are summarized in tables for quick reference.
