Advances in monoclonal antibody technology have influenced the practice of diagnostic
cytopathology from the types of specimens prepared to the use of antibodies as discriminating
adjuncts. Because the type of cytologic specimen often dictates the differential diagnosis
and the potential applications of these antibodies, this review focuses on the types
of cytopathologic specimens received in the laboratory, including serous effusions,
peritoneal washings, fine needle aspirates, cerebrospinal fluid, and cervical-vaginal
smears, and describes the potential adjunctive application of antibodies in these
specimens.
