Cordocentesis, also known as percutaneous umbilical blood sampling, is a relatively
new procedure that allows the obstetrician direct access to the fetal circulation.
The development of this procedure, its performance, risks, and advantages are reviewed
in this article. The current indications for diagnostic cordocentesis are presented
along with obstetric management issues and requirements from the supporting laboratories.
