Pretransfusion red blood cell compatibility testing consists of several elements, each of which must be performed properly so that the risk of a hemolytic transfusion reaction can be minimized. The various elements of compatibility testing should be monitored to detect system flaws and random errors that might compromise patient safety. When errors in the compatibility testing routine are detected, they should be analyzed for their cause, and corrective steps should be taken.
