The Role of Autoantibody Markers in the Prediction and Prevention of Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus

      In this article, we address four key issues concerning autoimmune (type 1) insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM): 1) Although acute mortality from IDDM is rare, chronic complications shorten lifespan by one third; 2) IDDM results from chronic autoimmune destruction of the pancreatic beta cells, 3) Prediabetes can be recognized by the presence of various anti-islet autoantibodies, and 4) Once effective therapy is available to prevent IDDM, we expect that state-wide or nation-wide islet autoantibody screening programs will be developed.
