Osteoporosis is associated with a reduction in bone mass and a significant alteration
in bone architecture. These changes lead to enhanced skeletal fragility. Impairment
in peak bone acquisition and rapid bone loss result in low bone mineral density and
a greater risk of fractures. Genetic, environmental, hormonal, and nutritional factors
are major determinants of bone mass and are important in understanding the pathophysiology
of osteoporosis.
