Community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections

Staphylococcus aureus has been responsible for a great deal of human morbidity and mortality throughout history. It causes a variety of minor diseases, such as localized skin lesions, abscesses, laceration infections, and impetigo, but also is responsible for staphylococcal pneumonia and sepsis, both of which can be fatal. It is thought to be responsible for many of the pneumonia deaths associated with the influenza pandemics of the 20th century, including the “Spanish” flu of 1918, the “Asian” flu of 1957–58, and the “Hong Kong” flu of 1968–69 [
