The field of genetics has seen vast expansion and exciting discoveries since Gregor
Johann Mendel's work on the garden pea in 1865. In the past few decades, an enormous
amount of progress has been made, especially in the area of human molecular genetics.
These advances, coupled with the success of the human genome project, have enabled
the cloning and characterization of many genes. Furthermore, these initiatives have
helped to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying many genetic disorders. As
a result of this greater understanding, the discipline of genetics is rapidly becoming
an integral part of all branches of medicine.
